Hungry Saturday: A Hot Meal, the Third Saturday of Every Month

On the third Saturday of every month, iPrevail volunteers serve a hot meal at the Samaritan Resource Center in Orlando. The tradition began downtown as Hungry Sunday, where a Christian community fed about 200 people at N Terry and Grove Park, and iPrevail has been part of that team for more than a decade.

Don’t go to church. Be the church.

The meal started as a grassroots effort among friends from different Orlando churches, and their motto still drives it: don’t go to church, be the church. iPrevail joined the rotation years ago. Today the gathering is called Hungry Saturday, and volunteers show up on the third Saturday of every month at the Samaritan Resource Center.

More than a meal

About 200 people eat together each Hungry Saturday. Volunteers learn names, not just faces. That relationship is how iPrevail connects people to furniture, housing help, or a mentor once they are ready to take the next step out of homelessness.

What people give

In 2019, Bombas donated 1,500 pairs of socks, sorted by retired volunteers and stored in a donated storage unit. In 2021, TJ Maxx gave 2,275 face masks that reached Hungry Saturday alongside foster homes and Bithlo families.

My family has served for three years. Regardless of our differences, we’ve felt what it means to help others. One regular is a blind man. Every second Sunday, other homeless neighbors help him get his food and make sure his needs are met. Even within the homeless community, we see real empathy.
