Disaster Recovery: Rebuilding After the Cameras Leave

On November 8, 2013, Typhoon Haiyan hit the Philippines, and within weeks iPrevail was founded to help ten families rebuild their lives, not just survive the storm.

Recovery, not first response

iPrevail does not deploy in the first days after a disaster. Groups like the American Red Cross and World Central Kitchen already do that well. iPrevail steps in for the phase that takes years: rent while a father finds work again, a grant to replace a wall, capital for a small business that replaces a lost livelihood.

Ten families, years of follow-up

iPrevail’s first relocation was complete by the end of November 2013, weeks after Haiyan hit. Danilo and his family lost their concrete house to the storm surge in Catbalogan, Eastern Samar. iPrevail covered Danilo’s rent in Manila while he found work as a sewer, then helped his wife open a small sari-sari store. In Guiuan, Eastern Samar, Jaime Labay used an iPrevail grant to replace his parents’ destroyed walls and fund a produce kiosk for his mother, then spent his own time checking on nine other families who had asked iPrevail for help.

Hurricane Dorian, 2019

When Hurricane Dorian flooded the Bahamas in September 2019, Kim Hall lost her home in the Bahamia neighborhood along with her catering business. iPrevail’s Giving Tuesday campaign that December raised money for Kim and her sons, Yohance and Jetson, to cover clothing, shoes, and living expenses while they rebuilt from Homestead, Florida.

Because of your help, my wife can and will start a small store business very soon. My children can enroll and continue their studies this school year.

Help a family rebuild for real

In 2013, an iPrevail grant helped Danilo’s wife open a small sari-sari store in Manila. It became the family’s new livelihood after Typhoon Haiyan destroyed their home. Your gift funds the next family’s fresh start.
